His other films included Dog Day Afternoon (1975), The Conversation (1974) and The Deer Hunter (1978). These films represent the sum total of his on-screen contribution and in the view of those who worked with him, his subtle but effective approach to his roles forced them to be better in theirs. In total, these 5 films earned earned 40 Academy Award nominations, though he never received one. He died as a result of bone cancer at the age of 42.
