House of the Dragon is a prequel series that finds the Targaryens at the absolute apex of their power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires - real and imagined - crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow decline began nearly 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen broke with a century-old tradition and named his daughter Rhaenyra Heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later gave birth to a son, the court was shocked when Rhaenyra retained her position as his heir, and the seeds of division were sown friction across the kingdom.
