During his lifetime, he fought with Christian and Muslim armies, acquiring the Arabic title al-sd, which later became El Cid ("the Lord"), and the Spanish moniker El Campeador ("the champion"). He was born in Vivar, a village near Burgos. As the head of his faithful knights, he came to govern the Levante of the Iberian Peninsula near the end of the 11th century. During the Reconquista, he temporarily reclaimed the Taifa of Valencia from Moorish control, ruling as its Prince (Seoro de Valencia [es]) from 17 June 1094 until his death in 1099.
