During his lifetime, he fought with both Christian and Muslim forces, earning the Arabic epithet al-sd, which evolved into El Cid ("the Lord"), and the Spanish moniker El Campeador ("the champion"). He was born in Vivar, a hamlet close to Burgos. He came to control the Levante of the Iberian Peninsula towards the end of the 11th century as the leader of his devoted knights. During the Reconquista, he briefly recovered the Taifa of Valencia from Moorish authority, governing the principality as its Prince (Seoro de Valencia [es]) from 17 June 1094 until his death in 1099.
