Bullet Train Review: A Bumpy Ride

Bullet Train poster 1

Bullet Train is David Leitch's most recent action-comedy movie. Brad Pitt plays Ladybug in it, who is an unfortunate assassin determined to carry out his mission without violence after a string of jobs gone wrong. The world's fastest train puts Ladybug on a collision course with deadly enemies from all over the world, who are all working toward related but opposing goals. Fate, however, may have other intentions. The end of the line is also the beginning of a chaotic, nonstop thrill journey through contemporary Japan, according to director David Leitch. Bullet Train where to watch.

Main Characters in Bullet Train

Ladybug & The Prince

Ladybug portrayed by Brad Pitt is a former assassin hired to board the train. He grabs a briefcase, and exits. Because he recently completed anger management and has decided not to murder, he rejects his handler's recommendation to carry a pistol and is filling in for another assassin who had to cancel at the last minute. A bomber crew of murderous oddballs are Ladybug's fellow murderers. Joey King is “The Prince”, a cunning and merciless agent of devastation who first presents herself as a helpless schoolgirl horrified by men's brutality.

Lemon & Tangerine

Lemon (Brian Tyree Henry) and Tangerine (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) are brothers who have gone from mission to mission amassing a body count that appears to be in the triple digits. They are now on the train guarding the briefcase and escorting the depressed twentysomething wastrel son of a terrifying crime boss known as the White Death. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been styled to resemble the evil drunk Begbie from the original “Trainspotting”. The two characters are likeable, despite Lemon's frequent ranting about how all he knows about humans comes from “Thomas the Tank Engine”(which reveals how limited the movie's knowledge of human nature is).

The White Death, The Elder & The Father

A Russian named The White Death seized control of a Yakuza family. The audience will have more pleasure resisting the urge to look up the actor who portrays him online because his casting is one of the story's finest shocks. His face isn't shown until the very end. Hiroyuki Sanada is “The Elder”, a grizzled but still deadly assassin associated with the White Death, and Andrew Koji is “The Father” —obviously The Elder's son. They are seeking retribution for pushing The Elder's grandson over a department store roof, which placed him in a coma. They think the perpetrator is aboard the train, mixing with the other murderers.

Plot of Bullet Train

The bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto takes about two hours and 15 minutes — just the right amount of time to pull off a cartoonishly over-the-top action movie, in which half a dozen assassins shoot, stab and otherwise perforate each other’s pretty little faces in pursuit of a briefcase stuffed with cash.

With the comatose grandchild and the metal suitcase as its focal points, the narrative first appears to be goal-driven. Bullet Train, however, turns into a half-hearted but sincere statement on fate, luck, and karma as the plot introduces new fighters and shows how they're all tangentially connected. Ladybug's constant (and frequently amusingly irritating) comments on these topics, voiced in discussions through a handler (Sandra Bullock's Maria Beetle, heard via earpiece), start to feel like an instruction manual for understanding what the movie is actually up to.

Eventually, Bullet Train reveals that behind this in-no-way-coincidental roundup of assassins was an elaborate plan by fearsome underworld boss the White Death to avenge the death of his wife. But he’s not the only one who lost a loved one, as Hiroyuki Sanada’s samurai-like The Elder demonstrates when he boards a stop or two before Kyoto.

Brad Pitt Even Shines in Bullet Train

People will no doubt talk about Pitt’s charm as one of Bullet Train’s saving graces. He has no shortage of giddy and madcap gusto in this film, hoping to satiate hardcore genre fans with its bloody, over-the-top violence and rising body count. Pitt's Ladybug is beyond all of that, much like Pitt.

Few actors display their movie-star good looks with such a nonchalant attitude that it nearly verges on disdain. Whether it's adopting a wandering eye in 12 Monkeys or hiding behind a poor haircut and worse glasses in The Big Short, it's not simply a willingness to play against attractive. Even when he looks fantastic, the attitude is still present.

Bullet Train may be going nowhere fast, but Pitt always appears to be there, secure in the knowledge that we'll cheerfully watch him grin through all the craziness that smashes around him (including two memorable appearances, one of which nails an actor's star power and the other of which badly misunderstands it). Pitt's brilliance has never been more apparent, and it shines so brightly here that everything else gets lost in the blaze.
